Tick Tips
Wear light clothing so ticks are easier to spot.
Tuck pant legs into socks because ticks usually latch on when legs brush against them.
Make a reversed-tape ring around the bottom of pants with masking tape to "catch" ticks.
Wear clothes sprayed with insect repellent containing DEET.
Avoid contact with vegetation.
Frequently check for ticks while outdoors.
After returning from outdoors, throw clothes into the dryer to kill ticks or put clothes into a sealed sack.
Shower after returning.
Check family members and pets before going inside your home.
Don't let pets onto furniture or into beds.
Property Maintenance Tips
Reduce leaf litter, brush and weeds at the edge of the lawn.
Keep grass cut on the short side.
Restrict use of groundcover, such as pachysandra.
Remove brush and leaves around stone walls and wood piles.
Seal stone walls that could be nesting sites for mice.
Seal small opening around the home that could be entrances for mice.
Rake up leaves in the fall and during the year as needed.
Keep brush piles out of the tick safe zone.
Use wood chips to help keep the buffer zone free of plants.
Trim tree branches around lawn edge to let in more sunlight.
Tick Removal ( Do's & Dont's )
Using tweezers, grasp the tick near the mouth parts (as close to the skin as possible).
Gently pull the tick in a steady, upward motion
Wash the area and use a disinfectant on the bite site
Record the date and location of the tick bite, and watch for early symptoms of Lyme disease of the next few weeks.
All of the following only increase the likelihood a tick will transmit the infection:
DO NOT squeeze the tick
DO NOT pour kerosene on it
DO NOT rub vaseline on the tick
DO NOT use a smoldering match or cigarette butt to burn off the tick
